Arabic internet users will get their first look at the Yajeel homepage, featuring a new search engine as well as content specific web channels serving as dedicated portals to the most popular topics available from third-party web publishers. Beta launch channels include a football news service containing the latest news and fixtures from Middle Eastern and international football, as well as a seamlessly integrated ranking tool allowing users to rate the content they view and increase or decrease it’s priority on a listing of “most popular” internet pages.

Since the birth of Mosaic some 15 years ago the way users access the Internet has not changed much. Despite many more documents and a handful of new languages and protocols, fundamentally user-internet interaction has stayed the same: the user seeks out and asks for a document, which is fetched by a browser and opened up into a window.

Red Panda is a radically different approach. At the heart of Red Panda lies a very fast NPL analyzer which processes web pages on-the-fly. This in turn enables Red Panda, independently, to single out relevant information from everywhere on the net and continuously refine and enrich the user’s options.

Today’s wealth of sources presents us the problem of information overload. Even though more than 60% of users regularly access the web to get their news, only a few do so through an RSS reader or even a start-page such as iGoogle, NetVibes or PageFlakes. Even Google, despite having nearly 1 billion users, could not convince more than 10-20 million users to adopt their start-page software.

The first reason for this lack of interest is quite simple. With so many sources to choose between during customization, the sheer number of options becomes a hindrance. It is tedious for the user to configure a reader or start-page to reflect all of his interests or all of his favorite news sources. The second reason is more subtle; even if this idea of configuration is attractive to savvy users, updating interests remains a chore.

Throughout the day, week and month users’ interests shift unpredictably, requiring constant revision to sources and feeds. Soon users are facing hundreds of articles updating every twenty minutes or so with many of no interest to them at all. Further, new micro-blogging technologies such as Twitter and Facebook increase information flow and density as they update every few seconds or so.

Reconciling this information overload requires a three-face solution: universality (reaching all sources), immediacy (consistent updating) and finally accuracy (results pertaining to the current interests of the users). Red Panda has been designed specifically to address all these requirements, and in so doing succeeds as a true democratized news reader.

When using Firefox with Red Panda’s add-on, a sidebar displays additional information (such as News, Blogs, Tweets and Diggs) directly related to the content of the current main page. A simple click on those sidebar links opens the source instantly without leaving the page the user is on. As an example, when browsing a page in a company website, Red Panda automatically displays news related to both the company itself and to that specific page within the website through links the user can select at his own convenience.

Behind the scenes, Stinky Teddy is a metasearch engine that polls multiple primary search engines for each user query.  Current partners include Bing, Yahoo! Boss, and Videosurf.   Additionally, each user query is submitted to multiple real-time search engines, including Twitter, Oneriot, and Collecta.   The content from the real-time search feeds is analyzed using a proprietary algorithm that figures out the up-to-the-minute meaning of the search query.  Based on this knowledge, a universal search page (web, news, images, video, and real-time status updates) is constructed.  Hardtke elaborates,

“Our search results page differs fundamentally from others.  Compared to a regular search engine (Google or Bing), our web, news, image, and video content is more focused on what people are actively talking about and less on the historical meaning of that search query.  For instance, is anyone typing ‘Tiger’ into Google today interested in tigerdirect.com or facts about the animal?  We suspect not. Compared to a real-time search engine, we don’t focus on the links that people are sharing, but instead focus on the language people use to describe contemporary concepts, people and events.  Depending on the level of buzz, we will behave differently, more like a regular search engine (low buzz) or tabloid magazine (high buzz).”

The unusual name comes from a stuffed animal that has been a lifelong companion of Hardtke’s daughter.  The web domain was first created as an homage to this particular teddy bear, and later appropriated by the search engine.  Hardtke adds, “I assumed that the name was only temporary, but everyone with whom I spoke responded with either, ‘I love the name’ or ‘I hate the name but won’t forget it’.”

ApexMD was launched in 2008 by husband and wife physicians, Dr. Wade Smith and Dr. Janeen Smith, who are dedicated to improving the cumbersome and disorganized process by which patients find or are referred to specialist physicians at tertiary care or other major medical centers. For many years, Drs. Smith & Smith have experienced, first hand, the difficulties associated with finding relevant specialists from each end of the spectrum of care: Janeen as a generalist physician practicing in a community hospital in Marin, California and Wade as a highly specialized vascular neurologist practicing at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, one of the nations top hospitals. Drs. Smith and Smith realized that if it was difficult for them, even with their inside knowledge and connections, to find relevant physicians for specific diseases at tertiary care medical centers it must be extremely frustrating for other referring physicians and patients.

Drs. Smith and Smith concluded that what was needed was a searchable database that catalogued physicians disease by disease and procedure by procedure. They observed that, although specialist physicians typically can be associated with many diseases and many procedures, there are some specific diseases or procedures for which they have a closer or even very tight association. Generally, these diseases or procedures are ones that fall within the physician’s area of concentration, or subspecialty.

In early 2007, using the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) database as a starting point, Drs. Smith and Smith began creating a massive catalogue of over 8,000 diseases and procedures and mapped all of them to relevant specialties and subspecialties. Along the way, they had assistance from nearly 20 other physician colleagues with expertise in various specialties. The result of this work is ApexMD, which was launched in October 2008, to assist patients, primary care physicians or other medical professionals in finding relevant specialists for specific diseases or procedures and to make the referral process more efficient and accurate.

Our physician profiles are created and mapped to our disease and procedure catalogue by a web crawling process, much of which is automated although some human intervention is occasionally required. We are constantly working to add more physicians to our database with the goal of ensuring maximum coverage of correctly profiled specialist physicians. You can assist us in this effort. If you are a physician with a profile in our database and you would like to change or refine your profile please search for your profile using our name search capability on our home page.

When you locate your profile please click ‘Is This You?’ at the bottom of your profile. An email will be launched. Please send the email to us using your official medical center email account in order to assist us in verifying your identity. Once your identity has been verified, we will send login credentials so that you can modify your ApexMD profile.
