Today, the first desktop search product to search and understand the content inside unstructured documents, such as scanned files, PDFs, TIFFs, emails and more, was launched by Rebus Technology, Inc.
Unlike other similar desktop search solutions on the market today, newly launched Recollect Desktop combines desktop search, e-discovery, document storage and content management in one reasonably priced product that appeals to both individuals and businesses. What sets Recollect Desktop apart is that it searches all electronic documents as well as paper and fax documents previously stored in old fashioned filing cabinets, which is not a secure solution for storing important documents in case of a disaster.
Recollect Desktop enables users to search the contents of a hard drive not just by document title, but will also search the words inside, even if they are misspelled or run-together. For the first time users can find and retrieve all kinds of documents including those that are optically scanned as well as PDFs, TIFF, JPEG and other unstructured files.
“Recollect Desktop is a must for any individual or business person frustrated by inaccurate, poor search results using the free solutions on the market and overwhelmed by the search and retrieval process,” said Vijay Rangarajan, CEO of Rebus Technology. “The amount of data we have to deal with is growing exponentially and people simply can’t keep up, whether it is paper files, emails or unstructured electronic files. With offices producing 1.53 trillion pieces of paper annually in the U.S. alone, everyone needs a more efficient, less painful way to manage their documents and quickly search for the data they need to access.”
Today, 85 percent of content is in an unstructured format that is difficult to search, sort and organize. Recollect Desktop allows users to give structure to these types of documents, ending the painful shuffling and search process people go through as they dig into piles of misfiled papers to find the right document. There is no need to manually tag files either since Recollect Desktop indexes it automatically.
For Individual Users:
Users can scan using their all-in-one desktop printer / scanner devices a wide number of random documents such as faxes, medical records, legal contracts, insurance and trustee forms, home mortgage reports, receipts, bills, estimates, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax records, or college files and Recollect Desktop will quickly and easily recall and list the relevant information they need, even if users can not remember where the documents were stored on the hard drive.
Recollect Desktop is an affordable and practical solution for home users burdened by the amount of space that paper files consume, not to mention the amount of time they may spend searching for something in their computer that is buried deep in a file with a name they may no longer remember. Recollect Desktop can also search people’s emails, as well as the content inside of email attachments.
For Businesses:
Recollect Desktop is not only designed for any business with filing cabinets and reams of stored paper documents, but also for businesses which have a lot of unstructured electronic documents, including PDFs, TIFFs and emails, that users need to access often or quickly. Recollect Desktop automatically indexes all of this unstructured data, helping companies and the SOHO market move closer and closer to a paperless office while improving overall worker efficiency.
Previously, if a user filed a PDF-image or scanned document on a computer or received via email, it could only be found if the user could remember the file name. With Recollect Desktop, users can search by any word, name, phrase or subject, just as they would search any Microsoft Word document.
“Think about Recollect Desktop as a program that can turn your physical filing cabinets into an easy-to-access desktop, where you search for information you need in a matter of minutes, including data from unstructured files,” said Anil J. Deora, Esq., a Silicon Valley attorney who is a Rebus’ customer. “I have been using Rebus’ Recollect Courier product and think that Rebus’ new Recollect Desktop will be a great productivity win for individuals and small to mid-sized businesses facing the paper, email overload and data retrieval problem on a regular basis.”
Recollect Desktop is available for download starting this week on the Rebus website www.rebustechnology.net. Individuals and businesses alike can now move closer to a paperless office with Recollect Desktop.

Now that sounds like a useful product! Rendering the contents of PDFs findable is a public service and an admirable accomplishment.

We are following the issue of Cloud computing tools to manage unstructured electronic documents. This looks like a great search offering, well beyond Google Desktop and enterprise systems.

This is a top tier product — incredible search capabilities and security. But unlike so many other products that claim to do the same, Recollect offers a simple UI that doesn’t assume the user is Oracle/SQL certified.
Kudos Rebus Technology!
