Edgios is bringing you the future of search.  This doesn’t just involve a bigger index. And it’s not just a way for us to deliver you the same old results more cheaply.  We’re re-inventing web search, opening up the entire process, fundamentally democratizing the discovery of information.

Do any of the big search engines let you control what goes into the search index? Do they rank search results according to what real people want? No, they don’t. But Edgios does.

If you’d like to be notified of our public launch, please provide your email address.  We’ll be in touch with you as soon as possible (but not sooner). Source: Edgio, as seen in Dragan Varagic Blog

Social Mention is a social media search engine that searches user-generated content such as blogs, comments, bookmarks, events, news, and videos.

It allows you to easily track what people are saying about you, your company, a new product, or any topic across the web’s social media landscape in real-time.

Search results are aggregated from numerous popular social media sources, including Google blog search, Twitter, Delicious, FriendFeed, Flickr, Digg, YouTube etc. and remixed as a single stream of information. The data is fresh, which means you can track conversations as they are happening in real-time.

In addition to web-based search results, Social Mention also features email alerts and personalized RSS feeds for automatic and instant updates.

Visual Search Engine Viewzi Launches Power Grid

Viewzi has launched the largest major feature upgrade to the visual search engine since the company launched the site.

Introducing the new Power Grid view
Visual search engine Viewzi Inc. announced the launch of its 18th search view this week, the Power Grid View. This new search view gives users a whole new way to visualize their search results. Users can choose between a screen shot view or a text view to display their results and dynamically lower or raise the number of results that are displayed by simply resizing the window on their internet browser. Each result can be hidden and “removed” from the search results or starred so the result is shaded green, bringing attention to specific search results. This makes it easier for the user to sort out “good” results from “bad” ones. Users can also open all starred results with a single click by clicking on the new “open all” button in the top-right corner of the web page after they have selected all the “good” results they want to explore.

New Feature Lets Users Set A Default View
Users are now able to set a default view in Viewzi with a single click of a button. Before this feature was added users were directed to the View Mix. The View Mix feature allows users to quickly slide views left and right and select their desired view. Default views allow searchers who are registered on the site the ability to bypass the View Mix altogether. When a user performs their initial search they are now immediately taken to their chosen default view to see the results from their query.

Users still have access to all the views in the Viewzi search engine via the mini mix bar on the top of the browser window. Default views give users much faster access to the results they are seeking on Viewzi.

What Else is New?
Favorites. Users can now mark views as their favorites which will give them easier access to the views they like the most. Additionally, users are able to select the favorite views they like and toggle the interface so only their favorites are shown in Viewzi.

Ratings. Users can now rate all the views. Viewzi will use the ratings in future releases to help the Viewzi view selection engine determine view relevancy in relation to the search terms being used, data sources and search engine results being returned.

Comments. Users can now leave comments on each view to let Viewzi and other users know what they think of the views. The information from this feature will also be used to evaluate what new features need to be included in future releases of individual views.

Spell Checker. Viewzi now includes a spell checker/suggestion engine integrated into the search experience. If the engine detects a typo during a search, it will suggest an alternate spelling to help the user find what they are looking for as quickly as possible.

What’s improved?
The performance.
The team has worked hard on what has been perhaps the number one issue it encountered since its June 9th launch and has made dramatic improvements in this area. A combination of hardware upgrades and reconfigurations on the server side of the platform coupled with software rewrites and updates have allowed the Viewzi team to increase the performance of the search platform in the areas of search, semantic search, and interface performance.

The leading Russian search engine Yandex has reached 50 million searches per day, the company announced on its corporate blog. This number includes searches made on Yandex partner sites Mail.ru, Tut.by, Quintura.ru, and others that use Yandex.XML to power search results.

This will imply that Yandex run rate of monthly searches has increased to 1.5 billion, up from 1 billion in January 2008. That would rank Yandex the 6th largest worldwide search property after Google, Yahoo!, Baidu, Microsoft, and Naver and ahead of eBay, Time Warner, and Ask.The company also recently announced that a daily audience of Yandex Advertising Network of sites that embed the Yandex.Direct contextual ads now reaches more than 10 million users, up 80% from September 2007. The Yandex advertising network was launched just two years ago. Its partners include Mail.ru, Mamba.ru and Livejournal.com, as well as several web search services of the Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian Internet Aport.ru, Gogo.ru, Nigma.ru, Km.ru, Ukr.net, Tut.by, All.by, and Quintura.ru. In 2007, the Yandex advertising network accounted for more than 10% of Yandex revenues of $167 million.

According to business daily Kommersant that quotes investment bankers, the shareholders of Yandex have decided to postpone its multi-million dollar IPO on Nasdaq because of the world’s financial crisis. The IPO was originally planned for the second half of 2008. The private equity investors Internet Search Investments and Baring Vostok Capital Partners own 35% stake in Yandex. Tiger Technologies owns the other 15% stake in the company.
