Every Saturday on AltSearchEngines we travel to another part of the globe in search of more international alternative search engines. Today we have arrived in Greece and discovered B i G (But it’s Greek).

Now, in order to demonstrate how handy it can be to know some non-English search engines, I’d like to walk you through a very typical search. For this post, let’s just suppose that you are going on a trip to Greece and you desperately need a a Greek/English guide to Absinthe.

Editor’s note: Of course you would search for something else! This is for evaluation purposes only.

Step 1, Go to the home of Alternative Search Engines.

Step 2, Look up a good post, like Phil Bradley’s 4,000 country-specific search engines.

Step 3, From his list of countries, pick Greece (obviously).

Step 4, You have 54 choices to look over, hmmm, let’s try Big (http://www.big.gr/src/)

Looks good! BiG lets you search in either English or Greek characters. Do we have any Greek readers out there? If we do, please leave a comment after this post!

Step 5, As hoped, BiG has found two Greek sites for Absinthe. Let’s try the first one.

It takes us to a Greek Absinthe site alright, with this cryptic quote as the header.

Since I don’t read Greek, I have to take a side trip over to Babel Fish to get it translated.

It says, “…in fact his (Ernest Heminway) masterpiece ‘To Whom The Bell Tolls’ was written under the influence of ‘The Green Fairy.’”

Step 6, back on the site, I find a link to a Guide to Absinthe brands. But can I read it?

Success! Every page is written in Greek on the left and English on the right. Mission accomplished.
