Alternative Search Engines: Search beyond Google, Yahoo and Microsoft (in Germany).

Against the background of the takeover bid of Microsoft for Yahoo! and the stiff reaction of Google the current statistics on the shares in the advertising and search engine market get an especially high attention.

Comscore recently presented new data on the big internet companies, which were clearly arranged and interpreted by “Net economist” Holger Schmidt.

According to this, Google has been used for 62.4 percent of the worldwide search queries. In the US the situation for Yahoo and Microsoft is considerably more optimistic. After all, here they achieve together 33 percent of the search queries, Google gets 58 percent.

In Germany by contrast the dominating position of Google is downright bone-crushing.

According to the recent data from Webhits, Google’s market share for search engine usage reaches a phenomenal 89.2 percent. Yahoo as runner-up reaches barely 3.1 percent and MSN Live Search with 1.9 percent is not far from meaninglessness.

Apparently there is not much space for new offerings beyond the Big Three.

But precisely because seeing their market dominating position the look to alternative and specialized search engines is worthwhile. AltSearchEngines, a sister blog of ReadWriteWeb is one of the best contact points for it.

Part of the service is the list of the Top 100 Alternative Search Engines, which is updated monthly.
