Why should you stop by AltSearchEngines every day? Well, one reason (of many) is that we have just deployed our patent-pending stealth radar system. ASE Radar constantly scans the Search space, looking for any Alts going public. If you know of an alt search engine in Stealth, Alpha, or private Beta, please send an email to: Charles@ReadWriteWeb.com

Here are just a dozen of the ones we are watching now:

   Polar Rose

   makidi

   Zitgist

   Lexxe

  iMedix

   iPrecis

dipsie

Digger

   CareerMesh

   Powerset

   mobot

   TV Mama

Search Engine of the Day: guruji

Around the world in 80 days!

Every Saturday, the Search Engine of the Day is an international one.

Last week it was grabble , a South African search engine.

This week it’s guruji , an Indian search engine.

Next week we’ll be taking a look at Romanian search engines!

Guruji is India’s first crawler based search engine focusing exclusively on the needs of the Indian searcher. What that means is that they don’t rely on manual submission of URLs, but rather their smart programs crawl the web to find Indian content, and then store the content in such a manner that it can be searched on in real time.

If you are looking for specific information like the address of your favorite movie theater or the phone number of your local Chinese restaurant, it might not be available on any of the websites on the Internet, so they are developing city search, or ‘local search.’

Guruji believes that by focusing on Indian content and Indian users that it can perform better than a major search engine like Google where their attention is diffused around the globe.

Parlez vous francais?

AltSearchEngines succeeded in discovering the top 1,000 (one thousand) alternative search engines because we had a team of five volunteers who collaborated on a common database.  The monthly “Top 100 Alternative Search Engines” comes from this Master List.  But these are all English language search engines!  What about Italian, Russian, German, and French search engines?

If you would like to head up a particular language group for AltSearchEngines, we will challenge you to find just 100 search engines for that language.  Interested? Email Charles@Read/WriteWeb.com

Web applications were once considered slow and unreliable, compared to their desktop counterparts. But these days, people are increasingly choosing web applications over desktop applications. Amazingly, GMail is found to be faster than desktop email programs.  The web is morphing into the desktop, and today we are witness to the command line making its appearance in this new world, as yubnub the command-line for the web.

Q: Where did you get a crazy name like YubNub?

A: Watching Star Wars VI. It means ‘Hooray’ in Ewok!
