Airbnb is an online marketplace for peer-to-peer traveling.

floatingbedWe enable people to earn money by renting out extra space, and offer travelers a viable alternative to hotels. It’s simple. Nice folks, folks like you, list their guest rooms, futons, and even couches on the site and set a price per night.

Adventurous travelers looking for a place to stay can search the listings for an accomodation that’s just right. When they find a match, guests can book your room via credit card. You receive a notification to check out their profile, and decide if the guest is appropriate for your pad. When you accept a guest, contact information is exchanged.

CEO Views: Adam Healey, CEO of hotelicopter

hotel
This is Adam Healey, Co-founder and CEO of hotelicopter.  We are a hotel search engine that provides real-time rates and availability for 150,000 hotels from over 30 leading travel sites.

Q: Out of the many search strategies out there, which 2 to 3 do you think hold the most potential for advertisers/marketers?
A: Vertical search engines, social search engines, and personalized search engines.  Of course, hotelicopter is taking advantage of all three*, because we are a vertical search engine focused on hotels that is personalized based on the user and their social network (via our facebook integration).  Advertisers are able to pinpoint more specific audiences based on the focus of the vertical search engine and the demographic/psychographic makeup of the user.

Q: From a business perspective, how difficult is it to actually get a viable engine?
A: That entirely depends on the confluence of the team, the market being addressed, and the product itself.  Generally, the bigger the market opportunity, the more you can get away with on the product and the team.  A great product won’t work if the market it is addressing doesn’t exist.  And I tend to think that good teams can fail and bad teams can succeed, again based on the market opportunity.

Q: What kind of $ is needed for R&D before launch?
A: Web sites today can be built for very little money.  But to win in a large market, you need capital not just to build the product, but to market the product.  This question has a million different answers, depending on the specifics of the market opportunity.  However, in today’s web environment, it’s most important to make yourself visible for people who are looking for your service to find you.  This means a company should focus on search engine optimization from a very early stage, even if they are building their own search engine.

Q: SearchMe, for instance, reportedly had $44M and its CEO said it would take a total of $100M.  Does this sound on target?
A: Sounds like a lot of capital, but again, this depends on the specifics of the situation and the market being addressed.  I would love to have $100 million.

*Note: Some older search engines serve a single purpose. newers ones combine two technologies, e.g. OneRiot is “Real-time + Social Search” and Truevert is “Green + Semantic Search.”

Here we see a “triple.” hotelicopter is a Vertical  + Social + Personalized search engine.
This is an important trend to begin following that we call Convergence. – editor
