Our guides scour the web to find the best, most recent information about your destination. You can personalize the information you want based on your travel dates, preferences, and destination. The guides come with local maps, festivals and events going on while you’re there, exchange rates, key phrases in the city’s language, weather forecasts and more.

home-page-feature

Travelers need reliable, accurate, and immediate information when planning a trip.Standard guidebooks are often 12 to 18 months out of date as soon as they hit the stores. Our content is the most up-to-date because we have an enormous technology base of spiders and crawlers that find the best information on the internet, and combine it with information from established authors and thousands of locals who are always updating the information about where they live.

We believe strongly in Creative Commons, in which users can share, create and build information that is available for mixing and remixing into unique new applications. As well as Creative Commons licensed information, we also use proprietary content and professional authors, which makes for accurate and authoritative information in our guides. With Offbeat Guides, you can get your guide in electronic format that you print yourself, or we can create and ship you a printed guide just in time for your trip, with all the latest information packed inside. Additionally, hundreds of our guides are available on the Amazon Kindle, making it even easier to access new information about your favorite destinations.

ShinySearchBETA
Q: Who started Shiny Search? When and Why?
ShinySearch was started in 2008 spring as a side project by me but I gave the needed attention only around Jan 2009.

The idea came when I noticed people wanting to personalize/customize everything from their myspace profiles to their virtual avatars, So why not their browser homepage?. This is the reason Google has iGoogle themes and I think the recent introduction of chrome themes validated our idea!…BTB, people seem to love this personalized homepage concept, the proof is in the hundreds of Youtube videos from our fans!.

Q: Where do all of those designs come from?
The designs are created in-house and the images we use are either licensed by us or they come from the public domain. Some of the design ideas came from our users. We have a standardized platform which helps us to cook a design quickly.

Q: How often are new ones added?
There is no set schedule but we try to add new ones as often as possible. One thing we want to avoid is overwhelm users so we add only when we are confident they will like it. Also we constantly remove designs if not many people use it. So basically what the user want is the main driver.

Q: What is your business model?
The best business model in the world, Search ads :) …But I am very careful not to over-monetize, so there are no ads in the homepage(s). Even the text ads in the search results page are minimal (no ads on the right side) to keep the user experience as pleasant as possible.

Q: Where should our readers go to try one?
Just go to ShinySearch.com and select a style.

There is no need to register or anything

Q: Can they suggest or request additional designs?
Sure, they can. We try to accommodate the user requests as much as possible

Q: What are the additional options on the homepage(s)?
Basically when someone starts the web browser they want to do these things (80% of the time!)
1, Check their web-based email
2, Check their social network
3, Read news
4, Search the web

Our homepages are designed so people can do all the above in a single click. Thus we have a menu bar in all homepages with links to top sites in the above categories (and some more). The menu links & search results are geo-localised so users will see only sites relevent to their country.

Q: What might be ahead for Shiny Search in 2010?
More designs and hopefully more users :)

Regards,

Gopinath  (Founder of ShinySearch)

Attivio Announces Active Intelligence Engine

August 12th, 2009 by Charles S. Knight

at_logoAttivio today announced it has released version 1.5 of its unified information access platform, the Attivio Active Intelligence EngineTM (AIE). The updated version of AIE boasts modules for Classification, Sentiment and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), as well as significant new features including high-availability ingestion and querying, guaranteed indexing, and next-generation security.

AIE v1.5’s enhanced security model eliminates the need for an enterprise search engine plus a relational database to manage complex document-level permissioning by storing content, groups and users as separate tables in its Universal Index. This allows significant cost savings and near-real-time access control updates because there is no need to re-index as changes occur.

The new modules in AIE v1.5 will change the way information is indexed and distributed within the enterprise, equating to more relevant results being available to the most appropriate and authorized users. These new module capabilities include:

*Classification Module – provides a state-of-the-art solution for classifying documents to a set of categories. For example, in the media industry, information could be classified by news categories (local, world, business) or classified ads (community, housing, for sale), etc.

*Sentiment Module – extracts and measures the sentiment or “attitude” of documents as well as the entities within documents. The attitude may be the person’s judgment (e.g. ‘positive’ vs. ‘negative’) or emotional tone (e.g. ‘objective’ vs. ‘subjective’).

*OCR Module – ingests text from scanned documents and images, including hand-written with high accuracy. Supported formats include PDF, TIFF, and JPEG. It can also be used to extract tabular data from supported file formats (e.g. tables found in PDFs).

“The sheer volume of structured data and unstructured content that exists in the average enterprise today presents a significant challenge for organizations to index, organize and route the information they have in house, let alone address the influx of new information on a daily basis,” said Sid Probstein, CTO of Attivio. “With AIE’s Classification and Sentiment Modules, content is automatically classified by category and measured by sentiment, enabling our customers to identify and process the relevant information they need, when they need it.”

Other significant additions and enhancements to Attivio’s Active Intelligence Engine include:

*Certified Multi-Node Configurations – provides high-availability ingestion and querying (formerly available on a custom basis), guaranteed indexing (fault-tolerant ingestion) and dynamic load-balanced content processing that allows adding nodes for compute-intensive content processing, without halting ingestion or requiring restart.

*Pluggable Relevancy Logic – allows customers to plug-in their own customized relevancy policies to control document relevancy scoring for query results.

*Index Backup and Restore Service – enhances performance for backup and restore functions and includes comprehensive multi-index, multi-node support and backup and restoration of index types and objects.

*Microsoft Exchange Connector Update – now supports crawling Microsoft Exchange mailboxes and public folders to simplify the bulk extraction of email messages and documents.

Attivio also announced it is now accepting applications for participation in the Beta program for its industry-first AIE SQL engine, which launches in September.

The new AIE SQL Module will let customers write and execute SQL queries against AIE directly or from existing enterprise BI tools and applications. The module will also include AIE query extensions that serve the full spectrum of enterprise information, from ad-hoc search queries to structured reports and a new frontier for true unified information access queries.
