dHey AltSearchEngines,

It’s official :)  Today we launched the public Alpha of Dorthy.com.

Dorthy.com, a new kind of online achievement service that provides people with the content, tools, and introductions they need to achieve their dreams.  The free online service reverses the traditional search process, continuously filtering and focusing the universe of online content, to connect people to the best stuff around their interest and aspirations— whether that’s running a marathon, visiting the pyramids in Egypt, winning the battle against an illness, or anything else.

People are looking for a way to turn dreams like these into reality and, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by Dorthy.com, not only do almost all people have dreams, but they’re now turning to technology as a way to achieve them. In fact, the survey also showed the highly-connected category of young adults remains motivated to achieve their dreams but often perceive  obstacles to doing so. Dorthy.com aims to rectify that.  We are excited to hear what you think.

To get started click here.

Dorthy.com is a service that provides the best content, communications, and connections around whatever you dream.  The destination has been in production since mid 2007 and utilizes proprietary social systems and technologies including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Psychographic Targeting, Lifestyle Modeling, Living Search, Aspirational Indexing, Common Sense Reasoning, and Semantic Understanding. In mid 2009 Dorthy.com’s  offerings will be extended to include mobility services as well as various live extensions around its most popular dream areas.

My job search Day 4 – alternative search engines

Since this blog began on June 1, 2007, we have published almost 3,500 posts exclusively about alternative search engines. Our conferences were composed entirely of these same search engines, and when I reached out for recommendations on LinkedIn, most of the responses were from, you guessed it, alternative search engines.

Well, this begs the question, are they hiring?

Let’s take a look at a small sample:

a

About half of the search engines that we’ve covered have a “jobs” link on the home or About Us page.

Let’s take a look at some of them.

pixsy_head

*Jobs at Pixsy*

Pixsy Corporation is a next-generation media search platform that enables any website or application to run a branded photo or video search engine. We’re a startup that was named “Hottest Company” at a recent venture capital event in Silicon Valley. Even though we’re a small company, our business is growing rapidly and we’re looking for extremely talented, highly motivated enthusiastic people to contribute to our growth. This is a chance to make a serious impact. San Francisco, CA. Send cover letter and resume to jobs@pixsy.com.

*We are hiring!*

We are now assembling our team for our new office in London. And this is the chance to realize your coding passion. Do you love to challenge the limits? We are looking for an excellent programmer (Windows, .NET, C#, Ajax), who lives in the Web 2.0 world, and is ready to dive in and debug complex p2p algorithms. Additional knowledge in search engine architecture and experience with build tools, version management and unit tests will make you our shooting star. If you want to change the world of search together with a small, open minded team, please get in touch with us and send your resume.

Thoughts:

While virtual offices are a cool concept, they don’t seem to be a very common.

These jobs are tied to California, New York, or London, etc.

Blogging about search engines is one thing.  Blogging for a search engine is another.

Marketing certainly seems a closer match than programming, though.

After covering search engines and job search engines, I know of no resource that would allow someone to search just the hundreds of search startups that we have covered, so checking each one might be the only way to go!
