Another one bites the dust – Goodbye Searchme

searchme

Searchme—the visual search engine
which has raised $31 million from investors including Sequoia Capital—is changing strategies.

It plans to lay off 35 of its 45 employees, take its site offline for the time being (it now redirects to Google), and refocus its technology in the broadband TV market, according to TechCrunch.

In an e-mail to TechCrunch, CEO Randy Adams said the company wasn’t able to raise $50 million in funding it needed to expand the distribution of its search engine. The site’s traffic had dropped rather dramatically in recent months, according to Compete.com…

Searchme’s struggles, however, once again demonstrate the difficulty that startups have had competing in the search space against the big players that dominate the market. Searchme joins a long list of much-hyped new search engines that later posted poor numbers or had to switch strategies. In his e-mail, Adams hints at some of the inherent issues, including the high cost of servers and distribution deals.

The search engine for Nature -

nf1Nature Find: Wildlife’s ability to survive the challenges of the 21st century is becoming outpaced by the events that are transforming our world. Global warming, the loss of habitat, and people becoming more disconnected from nature than past generations are converging on a dangerous path for our planet. The work of the Natural Wildlife Foundation (NWF) and our affiliates across the country provides answers to these challenges and will help ensure America’s wildlife legacy continues for future generations.

Finding Solutions to the Climate Crisis
nf2Global warming is the single biggest threat to wildlife and wild places. The impacts of global warming, caused by increased carbon pollution, are already being felt: more droughts, food and water shortages, severe weather, and habitat loss. National Wildlife Federation is advancing bold yet practical solutions to global warming. The organization is working to pass comprehensive climate and energy legislation in 2009 with a cap on carbon pollution to improve our economy, our security and the planet’s future. In addition to working to change America’s energy policy, National Wildlife Federation educates businesses, institutions and individuals on achievable ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

Turning Inside Kids Out
nf3At the same time that global warming threatens our future, we as a nation are losing our connection with nature, connections that foster healthy children and an appreciation for the natural world.

Today’s children are the first generation ever to grow up isolated from nature. Outdoor time for kids has decreased by almost 90 percent, while time spent inside, plugged into electronic media, has stretched to more than six hours per day.

wild_catNWF’s BE OUT THERE™ campaign is designed to inspire families to open the door and get outside. A daily dose of the outdoors improves children’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. The benefits of outdoor play are real: healthier kids with a life-long appreciation of wildlife and nature. It’s time to trade some screen time for green time. NWF is helping to make that happen with programs that bring people closer to the natural world. These programs and events provide meaningful Be Out There™ logoexperiences that touch their hearts and build a sense of conservation stewardship. Helping the BE OUT THERE™ campaign will be Ranger Rick®, NWF’s award-winning children’s magazine, which has been enticing kids outdoors for more than 40 years.

From Hyperlinks to Hyperwords

July 24th, 2009 by Charles S. Knight

Let’s say you come across something interesting on a web page. Maybe the name of a movie. However you cannot remember the year it was released or what actors stared in it. And you want to know.

To use any of the numerous resources on the web like the Internet Movie Database you would have to copy the name of the movie, load Internet Movie Database by typing in its web address or by selecting it from your bookmarks or favorites. Then you find the search field, paste the name of the movie and hit enter.

Of course, if someone has provided a hyperlink from the movie’s name to the database then that would be great. But what if you preferred to look the movie up in Wikipedia or do a Google search on it? In that case it would be back to copying and opening the web page & pasting.

Links only go to one destination, the destination the author decided on.

But that is with the current way of looking at things: interactive hyperlinks and barely-interactive words.

However, the Web is not all about hyperlinks, you can also have Hyperwords so that all the words become interactive.
