The Springo Concept:

The vast number of websites on the Internet makes it hard to get to the best site for a specific purpose. Most users choose between two strategies for dealing with the overwhelming array of sites: Either they stick with familiar sites, or they try to narrow down an unmanageable number of search engine results. Both approaches may cause the user to miss the websites that are most relevant—the sites that provide the precise information or services that they need.

Springo is a shortcutting tool that empowers users to rapidly and easily navigate to the best websites for each specific purpose.

* Springo singles out the most widely consulted websites—those sites that provide the information that most users need.
* Springo organizes the Internet according to categories and allows users to quickly navigate between categories, or focus or expand a search along the category tree.
* Springo directs users to specialized and expert sites, knowledge centers, and vertical sites that are most relevant to their search, since in many areas, no one site is likely to provide all the information that a user needs.
* Most Internet users can quickly and almost intuitively identify the websites that are most likely to provide the information that they need. The clear, user-friendly Springo visual interface enables users to assess a number of sites at a glance, without going through a time-consuming and irritating click-load-and-return process for each site.
* Springo ranks websites based on their actual popularity among users. Since user behavior is our only consideration, commercial factors and website optimization techniques do not impact our site rankings

The Springo Solution:

Springo makes getting to the site you need almost effortless.

* Springo offers three convenient ways to get to the sites you need: From the Springo site, with the Springo Express browser tool, or by simply typing a topic or site name —-not a URL-— directly in your browser address bar.
* Springo results offer a concise, selective array of top sites, chosen solely on the basis of usage statistics. Clear-at-a-glance screenshots are accompanied by an editorial description of each site and its categories.
* When the leading site offers users multiple sections that address different needs, such as a news site with distinct sections for news, weather and finance, Springo presents a site tree that maps top functionalities and sections, making it easy for the user to choose the one that best meets his or her needs.
* Along with top sites, Springo displays a topic list with “Narrow” and “Expand” options. Springo has mapped the best sites on the Internet, organizing them into categories that reflect the way users think. So with the click of a mouse, users can narrow or expand the choice of sites for greater targeting and accuracy.
* Because rankings are based on usage statistics, they are not susceptible to commercial optimization. So Springo results display the most relevant sites for most users.
* The Springo Express browser tool enables users to navigate directly to the website they need by simply entering a site’s name –not its URL– in the browser address bar. The tool also displays links to websites that are similar to the site that is currently open in the browser. In addition, when there are top sites that are relevant to search queries entered by the user in a traditional search engine, Springo displays handy shortcuts to those sites alongside the search engine results.

Welcome to BlindSearch, the search engine taste test.

Type in a search query, hit search then vote for the column which you believe best matches your query.

The columns are randomized with every query.

The goal of this site is simple, we want to see what happens when you remove the branding from search engines.

How differently will you perceive the results?

This site is built as a fun experiment by Michael Kordahi, follow me on twitter @delic8genius for notification of updates to this site.

The system has many flaws that I know about already, the primary one of interest is the lack of localisation. So, all searches are going through the US as US searches. The other deficiency worth noting is that there is much missing from the actual experience of using these search engines e.g., image thumbnails, suggestions, refine queries etc.

Ohh, and this site is very very beta, expect it to break! DM me or leave a comment with your feedback.

Disclamer: I work for Microsoft. This site is not affiliated with my employer, it is not a Microsoft initiative, it’s simply me having fun in my spare time.

Ohh, and while I’m at it, I might as well plug my other side project thetweetshirt.com :-)

nduckv101Duck Duck Go now gives users the choice to filter shopping sites. This feature solves the common search problem of getting overwhelmed with results that sell things.

The just launched feature is now available from the search engine’s home page, duckduckgo.com. After entering a search, users can now simply click one of three search buttons. These buttons will result in normal results, mostly info sites, or mostly shopping sites.

Gabriel Weinberg, Duck Duck Go’s Founder and CEO, explained: “A top complaint about search engines is that you often have trouble finding real information about topics that have lots of shopping results. We built this new feature to address that problem.”

The big news with v2.0.5 is integration with Microsoft’s shiny new search engine, Bing! Only launched on Monday of this week, Bing is very impressive and has been receiving wonderful reviews. Now, only a few days later, thanks to the latest version of Surf Canyon’s glowingly-reviewed, award-winning application, it’s even better:

Don Dodge, Director of Business Development for Microsoft’s Emerging Business Team and author of The Next Big Thing, wrote about Surf Canyon’s integration with Bing:

Two… innovative startups, WebMynd and Surf Canyon, worked quickly to customize Bing with real-time search results powered by OneRiot. Surf Canyon CEO, Mark Cramer, said that they are excited about this integration because “Bing users can now re-rank search results ‘on the fly’ plus get OneRiot’s real-time web results to further transform Bing search results into dynamic portals of information.”

Additionally, the new version contains additional compatibility with Google’s search pages.
