HelloMovies is a website that enables users to discover and interact with films. Our site is used by movie fans ranging from the casual movie watcher looking for a comedy to watch with friends to the movie fanatic searching for the most obscure Italian giallo horror. HelloMovies is based in Palo Alto, CA and was founded in 2007 by a group of students who watched too many movies in college.

The Movie Genome Project:

The Movie Genome Project is an organized catalogue of different words people use to describe films including genres, tastes and styles. The words are gathered from analyzing over 2 million movie reviews from around the Internet to produce genomes for over 22 thousand movies in our database.

We use information from the Movie Genome Project to power much of our movie browsing functionality. We also use the information to provide quick overviews of what a movie is about on each movie page.

So what’s the point of all this? Well, for starters, we think (and hopefully so do you) that this is just awesome data to have. You can see at a glance what genres are associated with each movie and how it feels to watch it! Where the genome really shines, though, is helping everybody discover the hidden gems you’d never know you’d like if you were going just by popularity or recent releases. By analyzing the actual substantive characteristics that belong to your favorite movies, you can find new movies to watch that will match your tastes! As the Movie Genome Project develops, we plan to introduce recommendations personalized for each user’s specific taste in movies. We also plan to expand the data in the genome to include additional information including filming locations, character archetypes and references to other works. Source: HelloMovies
