Since its inception in 2007, AltSearchEngines has served up thousands of posts covering just about every known alternative search engine.  Our mission has been – and still is – to promote these wonderful search engines daily and globally and to give them as much exposure as possible.   However, the current recession means that fewer search engines can afford to sponsor this blog.

In response, we have created a broader range of ad sizes, and more flexibility in the terms.  Mini ads will be offered for even the tightest budgets.  In order to survive these difficult times, we have to ask those that can to help out.
We just need you to inquire.

reegle1Access to the latest high quality information on renewables, energy efficiency and climate change is fundamental to the acceleration of the clean energy marketplace, facilitating investments, promoting new legislation and regulations and broadening interest and knowledge in the sector.

reegle2Reegle acts as a unique state-of-the-art search engine, targeting specific stakeholders including governments, project developers, businesses, financiers, NGOs, academia, international organizations and civil society.

reegle’s information gateway provides information and data on all the various sub-sectors within sustainable energy at a global level including:
* Jurisdiction and laws
* News and announcements
* Political declarations and discussion papers
* Project activity and financial reports
* Statistical data
* Studies, manuals and reports
* Tenders, grants and bids

Unrivaled in its field, reegle’s experienced team of internal experts identify and review all sources to ensure optimum quality control and currently feature over 370 websites. Strong links to the existing databases of core ‘Knowledge Partners’ such as the World Bank, IEA and UNIDO have also been established, broadening the overall information offering.

Utilising an intelligent search mechanism to refine and categorise all identifies information sources, reegle translates these via searchable use-friendly features into the user’s search requirements.

reegle3reegle has also developed an Actors Catalogue, a directory of organisations involved in clean energy. It contains information on (and links to) more than 1500 initiatives, partnerships and organisations involved in relevant fields. The Catalogue also includes information about the focus, geographical reach and projects of the various Actors.

As an ever evolving enterprise, reegle has recently introduced a frequently updated blog, developed strong co-operations with carefully chosen conference partners and produced multi-lingual options in French and Spanish. An exciting new feature is also the map based geoweb project, called “reegle maps”

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) is a Public-Private Partnership launched at the Johannesburg World Summit in 2002. REEEP aims to accelerate the global marketplace for energy effiency and renewable energy by actively facilitating financing mechanisms for sustainable energy projects and structuring policy initiatives for clean energy markets on the ground.

The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) is a global policy network aimed at providing a forum for international leadership on renewable energy. Its goal is to allow the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing and industrial countries by bolstering policy development and decision-making on sub-national, national and international levels.

The information provided on reegle is derived from three different sources:

Existing databases of our knowledge partners, pre-selected key internet sources, and its own internal database.

Knowledge Partners:
Knowledge Partnerships have been established, with key information providers meaning that the respective organisations collaborate with the reegle team with regard to their information. These organisations are

- the World Bank
- the International Energy Agency (IEA)
- the World Energy Council (WEC)
- the European Council for Energy Efficient Economy (ECEEE)
- the Collaborative Labelling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP)
- the Energy Charter Secretariat
- Energy.eu and
- Leonardo Energy

Selected Internet sources: The reegle team evaluates and pre-selects important internet sources of the sector. The information from these sources is included into reegle and is updated constantly.

Internal Content: reegle also has it‘s own database, containing the Actors Catalogue as well as conference papers and key documents and articles. reegle users can contribute to this internal database by maintaining the information in the Actors Catalogue or suggesting new Actors (you can register for free to suggest new actors).

BASE – The Bielefeld Academic Search Engine

BASE is the next stop on our tour of academic and scientific search engines.

logo_baseBASE was developed by the Bielefeld University Library (Germany) and it is a repository for web resources relevant to researchers of multiple subjects / fields. Today it holds close to 20,000,000 documents from 1,206 sources. The technology behind this repository is based on search technology provided by FAST Search & Transfer, a Microsoft company. Like OAIster the system is build around the “Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Meta data Harvesting” (OAI-PMH) standard.

The basic search interface allows you to search the repository and you can use the Eurovoc thesaurus (i.e., query expansion into 21 languages and synonyms – (see http://europa.eu/eurovoc/) plus search for additional forms of you search term.

The Advanced search enriches the search form by filters like the Content Source, year / date published and document type:

* Books
* Article, Journals
* Reports, Papers, Lectures
* Theses
* Reviews
* Audio
* Videos
* Images
* Maps
* Software
* Primary Data
* Sheet Music

In addition the advanced search allows you to limit your search on the following meta data fields:

* Entire Document
* Author
* Title
* Subject Headings
* Publisher
* (Part of) URL

On the results list you can sort the results by different sorting criterias and refine the search results as well. The hit list shows you all the necessary information you need to see in order to decide if the document fits your needs. In addition you will find a short description of the document. If you are still not satisfied with the result of the search you can head off to Google Scholar and try the search there.

Besides these search interfaces you can use a browsing functionality which is located at BASE Lab. By using this browser you can navigate through the content of the repository based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) of the documents. About 100,000 documents have been assigned with a DDC. Last but not least you can download search plug ins for IE and FireFox. Base is also supporting OSDD (Open Search Description Document) so that you can add this search engine to your browser.
