The Socially Conscious Search Engine – Hoongle

Every six seconds a child dies because he or she is hungry. There are over 900 million undernourished people in the world today. That means one in nearly seven people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger is the number one risk to health worldwide

Hoongle is a socially conscious Internet search engine. For every search you do, we donate 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger.  When you perform a search using Hoongle, your search is routed through Google. So the results you see are identical to Google’s. The difference is that when your query originates with Hoongle, Google shares a portion of its revenue with us. We donate our income (less necessary operating costs) to the United Nations World Food Program, which carries out operations around the world to deliver food aid to those in need.

We use the United Nations World Food Program’s “Fill the Cup” initiative to deliver food aid. It provides a red plastic cup full of porridge, rice, or beans to schoolchildren in developing countries and gives girls an additional monthly ration to take home. These meals reach approximately 20 million hungry children and are a major incentive for poor families to send their children— particularly girls— to school.

Although 20 grains of rice might seem little, you can make a significant impact over time. For example, if you use Hoongle only twice a day for a year, you will contribute about 15,000 grains of rice. If you get your friends to help too, we can create a global movement that will save the lives of millions of children.

20 grains of rice x 2 searches a day x 364 days = 14,560 grains of rice. Source: Hoongle
