colCollecta is a real time search service that provides persistent, real time streams of results via API and a web destination at Collecta.com.

Using a robust XMPP platform to facilitate lightning fast information flow, Collecta tracks results from Web sites, news stories, blog posts, microblogging updates, social status messages and other focused data sources. Users can manage collections of searches on stories, conversations, and comments with immediate and continuous updates on the topics they care about most.

“The time is right to accelerate Collecta’s efforts to bring the first real time web search to market. Attracting someone with Gerry’s product and revenue generation experience is a big win for us,” says co-founder Jack Moffitt, CTO. “We believe real-time search is the perfect application for our technology platform.”

“The wealth of information and conversation on the Web is staggering. It gets harder every day to find the commentary, insights and answers you need,” said Gerry Campbell, CEO. “We created Collecta to do the ‘heavy sifting.’ We make it easy for you to stay on top of the topics that matter most, be that your favorite sports team, a new car you’ve been eyeing, or your company. We scan the Web and reach deep into the social media universe to bring you results – in real time.”

Here’s how the first version works:

1. Users visit Collecta.com (or Collecta API) and enter a search query.

2. Collecta instantly draws relevant items, including news, messages, blog posts, social network status updates, etc. from its information streams.

3. Collecta then continues to track these search terms for updates, returning new results instantly to users in an ongoing feed.

“Collecta cuts through the clutter by placing people in the flow of information on their favorite topics and breaking news,” said Jon Callaghan, Managing Partner, True Ventures. “True Ventures is pleased to be working with Gerry and the team to deliver on this essential next step in Web search services.” Last fall True Ventures led a Series A investment in Stanziq Inc., now known as Collecta.

The Collecta search service will roll out in two phases:

Initially, it will return results from a sampling of news sites blogs, microblogs and social networks.

As the service matures it will extend its reach to return results from all corners of the Web.

AltSearchEngines revises definition of “alternative”

From the latest Hitwise report.

Just in time for our annual conference, AltSearchEngines has modified the definition that we use (yours may be different) for an “alternative” search engine.  When we launched, it meant any search engine except the 5 major search engines – at the time.

Now when we use the term, to us it means any search engine besides Google.  Therefore at our conference you should not be surprised to see Powerset (Microsoft) as a panelist and the lead sponsor, or the Yahoo! BOSS team as a speaker and sponsor, or ex-Googlers, Askers, or AOLers  in the audience.

Not all search engines or search tools want to see Google’s percentage of the U.S. market share receed, and we accept that, but many do.  Currently Google’s share of the search market seems to be unstopable, although it was 72.09% for January 2009  and just 72.11% for February.

So the question is, if every search engine that wants a larger slice of the pie is on the right track, will we see Google’s market share steadily decline  (in our lifetime)?  If not, could it be that that there are other approaches not yet mature – or not yet tried?

One thing’s for sure, I know of no other gathering of search engines the likes of which will join us!

Steve Wozniak Joins DeepDyve’s Advisory Board

dd1DeepDyve, the search engine for the Deep Web, just announced that Steve Wozniak has joined their Advisory Board. He will advise on technology trends and user experience. As co-founder of Apple, Wozniak’s engineering skills led to innovations that redefined the boundaries of personal computing.

“The Deep Web holds an almost limitless wealth of data, yet most of that information is collecting dust because nobody’s come up with a way to mine the data in a way that’s useful to researchers and consumers,” said Wozniak. “DeepDyve’s search technology is a breakthrough compared to the traditional keyword search that we know today. The company has the potential to transform Deep Web search, and I’m excited to help bring about that transformation.”

2009-03-24_1149For years, researchers have tried in vain to use the Deep Web for research purposes, yet an estimated 99.8% of the Internet is still hidden from many of today’s search engines. To address this problem, DeepDyve developed its KeyPhraseTM technology, enabling its users to type in a few words, or copy an entire article as their query and find all related articles from only the best sources in the Deep Web.

“Steve’s place in the history of computing is already well established. But what sets him apart is his passion for technology and his commitment to mentoring and fostering the next generation of technology companies,” said William Park, CEO of DeepDyve. “We’re honored that Steve has chosen to work with DeepDyve, and we’re excited about the strides that we’ll make together.”

Omgili Stream – Discuss till you bust!

I’ll come out and say it. I’m a discussion junkie. I usually have 5 tabs from different news sights open on my browser at any given time, and then I need to talk to people about them. Except for celebrity break ups, you can bet I’m interested in discussing. Now I can find those discussions on Omgili Stream.

We covered Omgili last month here. Omgili Stream is different in that it’s a real time flow of discussions going on right now, so you can peep your head in and say something, or find the most up to date discussions. It’s your way to find “subjective information”. Rather than searching for sites and pages, Omgili finds consumer opinions, debates, personal experiences and the like. Most of the experiences have already been described – Find these descriptions through Omgili. They do this by focusing on forums, discussion groups, and mailing lists.

They also combine with normative search to give both the objective and subjective angles on your search – meaning both the link-count and the discussion relevance.

Here is a taste of what you’ll find here. A search for AIG gave me a list of articles and discussions, under which I can see the responses and number of authors of the discussion going on.

Some of the content is even pretty fun. I ran a search for Benjamin Netanyahu, who is supposed to be Israeli’s new Prime Minister, if he can ever put a government together. Being right wing, there are doubts as to whether he will even be invited to the US in July. People discuss this. One guy wrote this:

I found that very sweet, he providing his sleeping bag just like that without even knowing the guy first. Sometimes you can really feel the love in this world.

The other services Omgili offers are, in order of nothing in particular:

* Omgili Buzz – Gives a daily overview of the most popular discussion topics
* Omgili Graphs – Create chatter graphs about the topics of your choice
* Omgili Search Aid – Search in real user queries and get ideas about how to refine your search terms.
* Google@Omgili – Get the best of two worlds – Objective Search (Google) combined with Subjective Search (Omgili).
* Omgili Q&A – Omgili Q&A is a sub-section of Omgili that is dedicated to finding questions and answers.
* Omgili TV Shows – Search for opinions and reviews about your favorite TV shows.
* Omgili Israel
* Omgili Japan
* Omgili Data Feed – The Source for Online Discussions.
