According to this month’s Hitwise report:
From August 2007 to August 2008:
Yahoo! lost ground from 22.87% to 18.26%
MSN lost ground from 6.53% to 5.32%
Ask lost ground from 3.49% to 3.45%
Google took up the slack 63.98% to 71.01%
Our beloved Alts started with 3.13% of the pie and ended a year later with 1.96%.

One question I have is what is the criteria Hitwise is using to judge marketshare.
For example, if a site is using Google CSE as their internal search engine, is it providing an additional bump to Google?
What might be interesting to see is if there’s a correlation of alt market loss compared to when the majors opened up their API’s. (eg. Google CSE & Yahoo! BOSS).
