Searchii is a search engine designed to deliver fast, relevant results. Searchii is a New Zealand owned company, but operates out of New Zealand, Australia, United States, United Kingdom and Ireland. With Searchii you can find local websites, search the World Wide Web, find images, video or catch up on today’s news.
The vision for searchii came from a lack of relevant search options in New Zealand. Searching for local search results became a task of filtering out the rubbish and ending up lost, or using offline methods. After developing this for New Zealand, we figured we’d do the same for Australia, US, UK and Ireland.
Cool Features
Not only can you search the entire web, you can search only New Zealand results. You can also search through the billions of images and video on the web. We’ve added some cool features which we’ll cover off more under technology however here’s just a small sample. Obviously I have searched for ABBA images.
Individual Result Preview: We have developed a little features called our ‘preview’ feature. This enables our users to preview each search result underneath in a nice little window, before navigating off to that page.
Find an Item search: This enables users to find a local item from multiple auction websites. Why visit each auction website when we can do that.

“Our focus on high quality, local content is common across all of the countries that we operate in,” explains Searchii managing director, Alex Greig. “Although Searchii offers a standard web search across the entire globe, Searchii really comes into it’s own with its ability to filter down local searches to achieve much more targeted results.”
While Searchii provides all of the same search capabilities that users have come to expect from sites such as Google and Yahoo, including searches for text content, images, videos and news, the site has a number of unique features. For example, the ‘find an item’ function, which enables users to search and compare specific goods and services from a number of auction and retail websites.
“Kiwis spend an enormous amount of time on various auction and retail sites searching for a bargain. ‘Find an item’ complements and speeds up this activity”, says Alex Greig.
Searchii also has a unique ‘preview’ button, which allows users to open, check and navigate through a website within a smaller pane without having to click through to the main site.
Interestingly, Searchii has been developed to only return between 50 to 120 pages for any given search. Mr Greig comments: “If you haven’t found what you’re looking for in the first 5 pages of your search results, then that’s just not good enough. Our technology is focused on producing quality results over quantity. Who’s got time to sift through a million pages of websites?”
Other special Searchii features include: The ability to search specific websites and only have pages returned from that particular website. The ability to search for links from specific websites. An auto-suggest link with different suggestions of what the user may be searching for. A more cost-effective solution for advertisers (cost per click of 5 cents).
Searchii uses its own sophisticated web-crawler (affectionately dubbed “Bumby”), which focuses on website Meta information and page content that is relevant to a user’s search keyword or phrases. In addition, Searchii also grabs a handful of search results from other search engines and filters them together to deliver the most relevant content for any given search. This enables companies to gain higher page rankings based on the content of their site, rather than on the number of links they have pointing to their site.
