1) Do not forget to describe why you like one of the Top 10, do not just list a name.
2) The Search Engine of the Year will have many sources, and not just this survey.
On Monday, December 3rd, AltSearchEngines will publish its final Top 100 Alternative Search Engines list for 2007. Along the way, there have been 10 search engines that have earned the distinction of Search Engine of the Month. One of these 10 will be named the Search Engine of the Year, 2007.
We want you to have time to carefully check out each one. Some ask you to request a login and password. Each one is very different, and excellent in their own way. When you have an opinion, please write a comment to this post – just listing which one you like the best and telling us why.
There’s not that much time, just three weeks to go!
Exalead AltSearchEngines (ASE) recently named Exalead as its Search Engine of the Month. Notes the AltSearchEngines editor: “Exalead offers new tools that allow you to find the information you seek on the Web quicker and better, with many helpful options, excellence in Search, constant improvement and innovation”

AfterVote has so much stuff that has been done lately. We released a major update with a UI release. We have just finalized a major deal with a very large website to have AfterVote be the exclusive search provider. If you haven’t stopped by in a while, check it out.

onkosh is the best, their new english/arabic interface is really cool and it’s definitely a revolution in the search technology, Onkosh all the way
November 13th, 2007 at 6:07 am
i think that the search engines of the future will have to dish out less information and more solutions (you got google for finding millions and millions of sites).
some of these search engines figured this out and are supplying a service beyond “search”.
if i had to choose just one, i would submit omgili…the interface is simple and i got the impression that the people behind it are interested in trying to personalize searches.
good luck…
November 13th, 2007 at 6:08 am
I vote for Onkosh as it makes searching in arabic language more easier than any other search engine.
November 13th, 2007 at 6:15 am
Onkosh because it is english/arabic that unlike search engines like google, it searches all derivatives arabic words, by changing inflections, suffixes and prefixes, unlike google for instances which does literal string matching.
November 13th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Yes for ONKOSH since t is for the first time there is a search engine that uses the chat way of communication in searching for Arabic words.
November 13th, 2007 at 7:15 am

Exalead !
I love the previews, the quality of the results, the toolbar on the right which is just excellent for search refining, and many other things I can’t think of right now.
November 16th, 2007 at 4:09 am
Exalead is the best. The navigation is sweet and so much better than any of other well known search engines. Really really like the wiki search and the facial recognition in image search is innovative and useful.
Nice job!
November 16th, 2007 at 4:22 am
I would vote for Exalead. I am quite sad and have actually looked at all the search engines above here and find Exalead to be the number one search engine for my general and specific needs. Unlike Google, you can refine your result set so you are not left with millions of results some of which are relevant but the vast majority are not relevant. As a librarian Exalead’s ability to refine search down using its advanced search capabilities using logical and regular expressions is a god’s send.
Please keep up the good work…. cannot wait to see what else these guys are up to…
November 16th, 2007 at 4:52 am
Onkosh gets my vote. It’s built from the ground up to serve it’s target audience – the Arabic internet user. It doesn’t just go for the “usual suspects” features that other generic engines have, its feature set is really what the Arabic internet user wants. I wish them and altsearchengines.com all the best.
November 16th, 2007 at 9:47 am
I vote for Exalead, videos, wikipedia, images, thunbmails… the best one !
November 16th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
i vote for onkosh because it’s very easy & useful
November 16th, 2007 at 10:43 pm
Bill,
It is unfair from you to say that those who vote for “onkosh” are SPAMS!!
Many people defined why they consider Onkosh as the best engine and there is no reason to always repeat the same reasons, thats why some people make it short.
Onkosh is a very intelligent tool. In the Arabic alphabet you have letters which are no available in the “latinum” and onkosh understands it. For example in the Arabic alphabet we have 2 different levels of the letter “H”. So those who have no Arabic keyboard right “H” and they call the other level “7″. Onkosh understands this and automatically translates the “7″ into an Arabic letter.
In addition to that many people do not have an Arabic keyboard and therefore Onkosh installed an online keyboard. So everyone can write in Arabic.
And it translates every word from English to Arabic
Bill..Onkosh is simple AMAZING:)))

No to Dialogus.ru & Onkosh, because I prefer to search in English and Google is more efficient for me.
No to Aftervote, because Google is more efficient for me.
No to Kartoo, Quintura, and Kooltorch are all innovative, but not my cup of tea.
No to Omgili, because Google is more efficient for me.
No to Goshme, interesting because its a database of databases of databases, but Google is still more efficient for me.
Yes to Answers.com, the winner because I actually do use it outside of Google.

search engines in general are great. they take your mind of the unimportant things so you can focus on the big picture. like when you need to fight the evil orc king and save middle earth you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time to find information. that’s where search engines come in. I saw all of them are winners, because without them the orc king and his ant people army would destroy the earth.

Definitely Answers.com. It has never failed to give me the answer I’m looking for!
November 26th, 2007 at 9:57 am
Answers.com — the 1-click technology alone puts it head and shoulders above the others (whoever they are). CBS News and NYT agree that the technology kicks butt — it’s on their web sites.
November 26th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
AfterVote returns the highest quality results of all of the options listed.
Gets my vote with Answers.com as my second place.

Onkosh is an invention and a step that has to be celebrated and given credit.
It’s intresting how one can find a great deal of different services all in one. The inventors made sure their audiences are well served on both levels: entertainment and information.
It is original whether the Family filter , Spellchecker (for the first time in the Arabic search),the news service , the Blogs, Directory, or the Images.
As an Egyptian i am honored to have such a credible…unique place to reside to and be able to communicate in simple and professional Arabic…

Hands down, Answers.com is the best. Results are spot on accurate and you never need to venture to another site to find what you are looking for. Answers come in the form of reference content and also human-edited answers with their really unique WikiAnswers property. Okay… I’m a fan! Forget the rest, go for the best! Answers.com!
November 26th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Answers.com is by far the best. I like being able to check articles on Wikipedia for accuracy using hundreds of quality reference sources. Plus I am getting information when I search not links to who knows where!

Answers.com definitely. It is the triple play of reference: licensed material from authoritative sources, user-generated answers to questions, and artificial intelligence technology scouring the web for answers. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t look up information on it!
November 27th, 2007 at 3:00 am

Of course I would vote for Onkosh, for being the smartest and most useful Arabic search engine out there.
November 27th, 2007 at 5:21 am
I vote for answers.com because they use sources not found anywhere else on the web.
November 27th, 2007 at 9:18 am
I don’t know how you can compare Arabic, Russian and English language sites, but of the ones I understand, there’s no question that Answers.com is the best altsearchengine around. Sure, when I’m just looking for links, I still use the biggies (usu. Google and Yahoo), but when I want REAL INFORMATION, there’s nothing like Answers.com. The combination of Wikipedia with “real” sources like Britannica, Oxford, Houghton Mifflin, etc. means I can always find what I’m looking for, AND TRUST IT. My kids are hooked on it for their homework, and their teachers ask me how they know so much!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:02 am
I vote for Answers.com. That is the one site I can count on to find out about anything. They have the best information bar none. When I use traditional search engines after I do my search I have to search through each link to see which ones have the info I am looking for. When I do a search on Answers.com I just get the information. In this age of information overload this is really the best site to go to if you just want to find the Answers. It is excellent!
November 27th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Onkosh… It’s faster
November 28th, 2007 at 1:52 am
A Great Engine for the Arabc users…Thanks for the Minds who created it
November 28th, 2007 at 2:54 am
Out of the sites listed Answers is by far the best Alt search engine. Since they have started integrating WikiAnswers into their normal results there is very little that can not be found.
Best part is it contains Wikipedia alongside other truly reputable sources so you can fact check a Wikipedia entry on the same page.

Answers.com. You don’t have to follow links, you get information right there from Oxford, Britannica, Wikipedia and others all on one page optimized for the word or name you searched for.
November 29th, 2007 at 12:49 am
I believe the fact that we can actually use slang / spoken Arabic using either Arabic letters or latin ones (like what we are used to do for chatting and sms for instance) is really worth voting for. For Arabic language content search, Onkosh is by far the one worth voting for.
November 29th, 2007 at 5:03 am
Onkonsh is the best …
November 29th, 2007 at 5:29 am
My vote goes to Onkosh !

I vote for http://www.tfd.com
November 29th, 2007 at 7:08 am
I vote for Onkosh. Onkosh is definitely the most comprehensively superior and is the first to introduce proper arabic searching. The rest of the search engines do not appeal to me with their enhancements. None of them offer proper fully-fledged searching of the internet like Onkosh does.
November 29th, 2007 at 8:18 am
Outside of Google, Answers is also the only other reference/search site I use…
November 29th, 2007 at 9:45 am

Answers.com is the best!
December 17th, 2007 at 7:43 am
if you like Exalead, you will like tayait.com definitely
tayait.com has different arabic search concept, just try it …
December 27th, 2007 at 6:02 am
Frankly i see that tayait.com has a wonderful functionalities and relative results more than onkosh especially as it is better in understanding and dealing with arabic content
one of the features i like most on tayait.com are the refine search, it really narrows our search and this feature is not included in other arabic search engines, even google.
Another one is the great way to merge directory search with text search, for example its possible to search for websites that talks about economy in middle east websites
its interface is better than onkosh for me, being able to see result thumbnails saves a lot of time for me
Tayait.com had a very good advanced search that could narrow your search dramatically with little customization
Really i love it,…
January 29th, 2008 at 4:37 am
Exalead replaces Google Search – just as well as Lavabit[.com] replaces Google Mail!
Others can’t be used instead of Google.
P. S. I am performing an experiment of living totally without usage of Google. For 100 days only (for the first time).
March 31st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Who ended up taking it?
April 4th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Exalead of course; A performant search engine that make our search easier tanks to the ‘zapette’; the ‘zapette’ allow you to filter quickly the results.
Try it !
